SUMMARY:Traffic Safety Team cracks down on noisy vehicles this summer
DESCRIPTION:The City of Calgary’s Traffic Safety Team has begun enforcement this week focused on excessive vehicle noise along 17 Avenue S.W. In partnership with the Calgary Police Service (CPS)\, the enforcement and education blitz will run throughout August during the afternoons and evenings. This initiative addresses ongoing concerns from residents\, City Council and local businesses\, and helps improve safety and livability along the corridor. Drivers operating excessively loud or modified vehicles can expect increased monitoring\, education and fines. The team will also continue regular traffic safety enforcement and address pedestrian safety concerns as needed across the area. Why reducing vehicle noise matters Vehicle noise disrupts daily life and affects physical and mental well-being\, particularly in busy areas. Inspector Brad Johnson\, head of the Traffic Safety Team\, says noisy vehicle complaints continue to be among the top concerns of Calgarians each summer. “Reducing unnecessary vehicle noise creates quieter\, safer streets and a more enjoyable environment for everyone who lives\, works and visits these areas.” Examples of common noisy vehicle violations include: Noisy exhausts and mufflers Excessive engine revving Squealing tires Roaring or explosive sounds Loud stereos Amplification equipment Recurring or prolonged vehicle alarms Additionally\, modifying vehicles to increase noise\, such as installing aftermarket mufflers or altering exhaust systems\, is a violation of the Traffic Safety Act and subject to penalties. “Peace officers assess objectionable vehicle noise using a range of factors\, including measurements and information such as location\, time of day\, volume and duration\,” says Inspector Johnson. “Drivers are responsible for all noise generated by their vehicles\, and violations may result in fines\, including $270 for exceeding legal limits and $300 for failing to comply with a noise test.” Ward 8 Coun. Nathaniel Schmidt agrees that excessive vehicle noise has a real impact on Calgarians' quality of life. “Residents should be able to sit on a patio or sleep with the window open without a vehicle roaring past and drowning everything out\,” he says. “This campaign strengthens enforcement and raises awareness\, and I want to be clear: it is an important step forward. While there is more work to do\, we need every tool available to address this issue\, and I will continue supporting efforts to strengthen our ability to tackle excessive vehicle noise in Calgary.” Ernie Tsu\, owner of Trolley 5 Brewpub\, says noisy vehicle enforcement on 17 th is also welcomed by local businesses. “17th Avenue is one of Calgary's most vibrant destination districts. We're pleased to see action being taken to address concerns raised by the community.” About the Traffic Safety Team The Traffic Safety Team was established by City Council in November 2023 with $1.69 million in funding to address growing concerns about road safety and vehicle noise. The team includes eight peace officers\, two sergeants and one inspector\, and works closely with CPS and other partners to support coordinated\, city-wide traffic safety enforcement. The team began operations in March 2025\, focusing on speeding and safety in playground zones. The current shift to noisy vehicle enforcement reflects seasonal trends\, as playground zone monitoring decreases in summer while noise complaints increase\, particularly in high-complaint areas such as 17 Avenue S.W. SUMMARY:Two teens charged with robbing Calgary senior
DESCRIPTION:We have charged two teens in relation to a random robbery that occurred outside a senior’s residence in southeast Calgary. On Saturday\, July 11\, 2026\, at approximately 6:45 p.m.\, a 75-year-old woman was walking from her vehicle to her apartment\, located in the 6200 block of 17 Avenue S.E.\, when she was approached by two unknown males who attempted to steal her purse. The victim fought back and screamed for help\, attracting the attention of a neighbour who intervened. The males fled the area before police arrived. The victim was treated in hospital for minor injuries. Investigators collected CCTV from the area and through a review of the footage\, witness interviews and a comparison of evidence from a previous robbery\, two youth suspects were identified. A 14-year-old male and a 16-year-old male have each been charged with one count of robbery. The teens cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. “This was an unprovoked and opportunistic robbery that targeted a Calgarian going about their day. This incident will have a lasting impact on the victim\, beyond her physical injuries\,” says Staff Sgt. SUMMARY:Calgarians asked to consider urban wildfire risk and take action in new prevention campaign
DESCRIPTION:From Vernon BC to Spokane WA\, wildfires are encroaching communities at unprecedented rates this summer\, causing significant property damage\, displacement and\, sometimes\, injury and death. Wildfire\, along with other outdoor fire types\, have on average seen increased activity in Calgary since 2020\, similar to other municipalities in western Canada. While Calgary is not adjacent to large boreal forests\, its natural areas inevitably see fires and with increased densification and population growth in our City\, more residents than ever are living near urban wildland areas\, grasslands and other natural areas. “Seasonal risk of wildfire\, grass fires and other outdoor fires is a growing reality across Canada\, especially where residential neighbourhoods join up with wildlands\,” says Fire Chief Steve Dongworth. “While The City of Calgary provides some of Canada’s most effective fire response\, planning and emergency preparedness\, we also rely on residents and communities to reduce our shared fire risk\, both at home and in City parks and natural areas. Hotter\, dryer summers mean that we all play a role in keeping our homes and communities safe.” In response to this shared risk\, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has developed Calgary’s first dedicated wildfire resilience and prevention campaign\, which runs August 3 to September 6 and is supported through funding from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) FireSmart Program. Wildfire awareness campaigns are now common in rural and forested areas of Canada\, often through provincial and federal FireSmart programs\, and are increasingly common in municipalities across Canada. Like any municipality\, Calgary has unique topography and natural areas with a number of “wildland-urban interfaces” where residential development is adjacent to natural vegetation. These areas are detailed in maps at calgary.ca/wildfire where Calgarians can determine their proximity to our City’s major natural and wildland areas\, including a community-specific map . Wildland-urban interface areas exist across Calgary\, and they can be found in both established and growing communities. Living in these areas increases exposure to wildfire risk\, especially during hot\, dry\, and windy conditions that are currently being observed across southern Alberta and British Columbia. On July 30\, CFD issued a fire advisory for Calgary \, asking Calgarians to use extra caution when using open flames or any solid-fueled appliance such as fire pits\, barbeques and campfires. “If nature is next door\, wildfire is a risk. Learn about outdoor fire risk specific to where you live – and then take any number of our recommended big and small actions that will make a difference to reduce wildfire\, grass and bush fire risk in and around your home and community\,” says Chief Dongworth. Reflecting on his own experience touring the aftermath of the deadly Los Angeles fires in 2025\, Chief Dongworth says a little goes a long way in terms of adapting to warming summers and emergency preparedness. “Becoming more resilient in the face of increasing wildfire risk is a multi-year process\,” he says. “We don’t expect everyone to replace their roofing and siding however there is a lot that Calgarians can do today\, whether you rent or own your home – or while visiting our City’s parks and natural areas.” Calgary Fire has specialized equipment to combat wildland fires\, and trains regularly to be ready for major incidents. CFD and other City business units also collaborate with wildland-adjacent communities like Discovery Ridge to identify risks and opportunities related to potential wildfire activity. The City is also developing a wildfire threat assessment program to better understand wildfire conditions in natural areas across Calgary. “Discovery Ridge is a community where we need to balance the beauty of the natural landscape with the risk of wildfires\,” says Dana Fleury\, Vice President\, Discovery Ridge Community Association. “We encourage our community members here and in other areas of Calgary to learn more about how we can all mitigate the risk of wildfire in our city while preserving our environment.” Calgarians are asked to: 1. Create a safe perimeter around your home and property. Take steps to remove combustibles. Limit the amount of flammable vegetation in any potential ignition zone close to your residence. 2. Manage fuels and flammable materials. Store propane tanks\, firewood and yard waste away from your home. Do not store propane tanks inside. 3. Upgrade when renovating. Choose ignition resistant building materials and construction techniques. 4. Practice outdoor fire safety everywhere. Improper disposal of smoking materials remains one of Calgary’s leading causes of outdoor fires. Extreme caution should be used in the city’s natural areas and green spaces during fire bans and periods of high temperatures. 5. Prepare and know what to do. Calgary Fire has responded to an average of 23 wildland fires (wildfire\, grass and brush fires) per month annually since 2016. Peak activity usually occurs in May\, which on average sees an average of 42 wildland fires. Seasonal conditions continue to be variable despite long-term trends. From January to June 2026\, for example\, wildland fires in Calgary declined by 17 per cent\, primarily due to fewer brush\, or brush and grass mixture fires\, compared to the same period in 2025. This was strongly influenced by persistent cold temperatures and heavy snow accumulation during January to April 2026\, which reduced several ignition risk factors\, including construction activity\, outdoor smoking near entrances and balconies\, and the use of outdoor heating or open-flame devices. While spring 2026 wildland fires decreased in frequency compared to Calgary’s historical average due to wet conditions\, it is expected that outdoor fire activity will continue to trend upwards this summer and increase\, on average\, in the coming years. SUMMARY:Police investigate fatal collision on Stoney Trail S.W.
DESCRIPTION:Our Traffic Unit continues to investigate a fatal collision involving three vehicles that occurred last night. At approximately 11 p.m.\, yesterday\, Sunday\, Aug. 2\, 2026\, we responded to reports of a collision on the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail S.W. near the exit to Tsuut’ina Parkway. At that time\, it is believed a 2011 Mercedes Benz C350 being operated by a 30-year-old man was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail. The Mercedes Benz struck an oncoming 2016 Subaru Impreza being operated by a 43-year-old man. Following the impact\, both vehicles caught fire. A Chevrolet Equinox operated by a 52-year-old woman then struck the Mercedes Benz. As a result of the collision\, the occupants of the Mercedes\, the driver and passengers\, a woman and a child\, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Subaru\, the sole occupant\, was also pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and three youth passengers of the Chevrolet were transported to hospital\, one suffering from life-altering\, non-life-threatening injuries. Our Traffic Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Impairment and excessive speed on behalf of the driver of the Mercedes Benz are being investigated as factors in the collision. SUMMARY:Calgary Fire Department Responds to Fatal Three-Vehicle Collision
DESCRIPTION:The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a tragic three-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Tsuut'ina Trail SW just before 11:00pm that claimed the lives of four people and left four others injured. Multiple CFD crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious collision. Upon arrival\, firefighters encountered two of the three vehicles fully engulfed in flames. Crews immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached. Once the fire was brought under control\, firefighters continued to work in coordination with Alberta Emergency Health Services (EHS) to assess and treat those involved. Despite the rapid actions of first responders\, four people were pronounced deceased at the scene. Four additional patients were transported to hospital by EHS for further assessment and treatment. The Calgary Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the families\, friends\, and loved ones of those who lost their lives\, and our thoughts are with those who were injured and everyone affected by this tragic incident. Following the completion of firefighting and rescue operations\, the scene was turned over to the Calgary Police Service\, which is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The Calgary Fire Department urges all motorists to drive attentively\, obey posted speed limits\, avoid distractions\, and always wear a seatbelt. SUMMARY:Calgary Fire Department Responds to Three Significant Fires During Busy Sunday Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews responded to three significant fires across the city during the afternoon on Sunday August 2\, which challenged the department's ability to manage multiple complex emergencies while maintaining emergency response coverage for Calgary residents. At approximately 12:20 p.m.\, a structure fire was reported in the 400 block of MacLeod Trail SE. Responding crews encountered a substantial fire with multiple occupants requiring immediate rescue. Firefighters promptly initiated rescue operations and executed an aggressive interior attack. A second alarm was requested to provide additional resources. Several individuals were safely extricated\, and the fire was contained to the room of origin\, although smoke damage affected the remainder of the structure. Numerous patients were assessed on scene\, with six transported to hospital by Alberta Emergency Health Services. Given the extent of the damage and approximately fifty displaced residents\, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) attended and provided on-site support. While operations were ongoing at the initial incident\, CFD was dispatched to a second major fire at approximately 1:54 p.m. in the 100 block of 16 Street NW. Upon arrival\, firefighters found two detached garages fully involved. Crews established command\, deployed multiple hose lines\, and successfully contained the fire to the affected garages\, thereby preventing extension to adjacent properties. No injuries were reported in this incident. At approximately 3:00 p.m.\, CFD responded to a third major incident at the Shepard Landfill. Due to the magnitude and complexity of the situation\, CFD personnel collaborated with landfill staff\, employing specialized tactics and heavy equipment to contain the fire. Operations continued into the evening to achieve full mitigation and minimize the incident’s impact. Despite responding to three major fires over the course of less than three hours\, the Calgary Fire Department maintained emergency response capabilities across the city through coordinated resource deployment and support from crews at multiple stations. The causes of all three fires remain under investigation by the Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigation Team. Damage estimates are not available at this time. The Calgary Fire Department extends its appreciation to the Calgary Police Service\, Alberta Emergency Health Services\, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency\, City of Calgary partners\, and landfill personnel for their collaboration and support during these incidents. Early detection played a critical role in protecting lives and property during today's events. The Calgary Fire Department reminds all residents to ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of their home\, outside all sleeping areas\, and are tested monthly to ensure they are functioning properly. SUMMARY:Charges laid following downtown shooting
DESCRIPTION:Investigators have arrested and charged one man in relation to a shooting that occurred downtown last night. At approximately 8 p.m.\, on Saturday\, Aug. 1\, 2026\, officers were called to the Victoria Park/Stampede LRT station for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival\, two victims were located suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. It is believed an altercation occurred on the CTrain between three men. When the train reached the station\, the three men disembarked\, and one man produced a pistol and shot the two other men. The offender then fled the scene. The victims were transported to hospital\, one in stable condition and one in life-threatening condition. The man in life-threatening condition has since been upgraded to stable. Responding officers circulated the area and quickly took the offender into custody nearby. As a result\, Mostafa JAFARI\, 25\, of Calgary\, has been charged with: - Two counts of aggravated assault - Two counts of discharging a firearm with intent - One count of possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose - One count of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order - One count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon JAFARI is currently remanded in custody and will next appear in court on Wednesday\, Aug. 5\, 2026. “Brazen acts of violence like this have no place in Calgary and have a lasting impact on the community\,” says Calgary Police Service Acting Staff Sgt. Corey Der. “By needlessly putting members of the public at risk\, the offender demonstrated a complete disregard for the safety of others. DESCRIPTION:We have charged a man in relation to an incident that led to an officer-involved shooting in the southwest community of Bridlewood on Thursday. At approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday\, July 30\, we were called to the 1000 block of Bridlemeadows Manor S.W. for reports of a disturbance involving a man with a weapon. By the time of officer arrival\, the man had entered a residence. After some time\, officers engaged him and utilized tactics while attempting to take him into custody. Approximately two hours after the initial call to police\, the man exited the residence and a confrontation occurred\, which resulted in one officer discharging their Service firearm. The suspect was transported to hospital in critical condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). As a result of the investigation into the events leading up to the shooting\, Danny MARTIN\, 36\, has been charged with four counts of assault of a peace officer with a weapon\, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and four counts of failure to comply with conditions of a release order. An autopsy completed today\, Friday\, July 31\, 2026\, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner\, determined the death to be suspicious and identified the victim as 21-year-old Shakira BEARSPAW\, of Calgary. Investigators took one person into custody\, and they have since been released. As the investigation is in its early stages\, no additional details are available at this time. At approximately 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday\, July 29\, 2026\, police were called to the 1400 block of 38 Street S.W.\, for reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival\, officers located a man in medical distress. He was transported to hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Following an autopsy completed by the Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner\, the victim has been identified as Jaden River BIG SORREL HORSE\, 23. The death has been deemed a homicide. Annata'Ksisstsi'Kommaokii De'Channa Hope SMITH\, who also goes by Dechanna WELLS\, 22\, is charged with manslaughter. Naatoyikakatosina TaCheáh Heaven WELLS\, who also goes by Techeah WELLS\, 23\, has also been charged with manslaughter. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday\, Aug. 4\, 2026. There are 57 Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) sites throughout the city that can capture red light infractions. Five sites can also capture speed-on-green infractions. These cameras continue to reduce collisions and foster a safer driving environment at our intersections. SUMMARY:Body of a child located during search
DESCRIPTION:The body of a child has been located during today’s search for Parker. While we believe the child is likely Parker\, significant efforts are required to access the body and confirm the identity. Recovery efforts are under way. If the body is Parker’s\, it is believed he entered a culvert in a green space on the west side of Deerfoot Trail and travelled up a pipe and into a network of tunnels on the east side of the roadway. On Tuesday\, July 28\, 2026\, we received a tip from a member of the public who had located evidence consistent with the clothing Parker was last known to be wearing. Search teams deployed\, and as a result\, a child’s body was located by specialized search teams from the Calgary Fire Department. This green space area contains incredibly harsh terrain and is part of a water environment. As with any search involving water\, environmental conditions can influence what can be observed and when evidence may become visible. During the past two weeks\, we had conducted searches of the area for Parker\, however\, there was no evidence located that would suggest a more thorough search of the area was required. This is not the outcome anyone hoped for. Like so many others\, we hoped Parker would be brought home safely. Our thoughts are with Parker's family\, loved ones and all those affected by this devastating loss. We know people across the world have spent the past 13 days sharing Parker's information\, searching for him and holding onto hope for his safe return. “Behind every search map\, every briefing\, every tip and every hour spent looking was a little boy who was deeply loved by his family\,” says Chief Katie McLellan. “Today\, we grieve alongside them and share in the profound sadness of this loss. Our thoughts are with Parker's family\, loved ones\, friends and everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.” We extend our sincere gratitude to the thousands of community members\, volunteers\, partner agencies and members of the media who assisted in the search effort. The compassion\, dedication and support shown throughout this investigation have been extraordinary. At this time\, there is no evidence that criminality was involved in Parker's disappearance. Search operations are complex and are influenced by factors including terrain\, vegetation\, weather conditions\, visibility and the information available to investigators at the time. While search teams worked extensively and thoroughly throughout this investigation\, it is not always possible to completely eliminate every possibility within a broad-scale search area. We recognize there may be questions about the circumstances of this case and the investigation remains ongoing to answer as many remaining questions as we can for Parker's family. In cases where no criminality is involved\, once a missing person has been located\, we remove identifying information\, including names and photographs\, from public platforms. We do not typically share details about how or where a person was located or publicly disclose whether they were found safe or deceased\, to respect the privacy of those affected. DESCRIPTION:The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is pleased to welcome Minnie\, a specially trained facility dog whose primary role is to support people during some of their most challenging moments. Minnie joins CEMA from the Dogs with Wings (DWW) Assistance Dog Society\, a not-for-profit organization that trains assistance dogs and places them in a variety of settings throughout Alberta and Western Canada. As an accredited facility dog\, Minnie is trained to stay calm\, focused and responsive in high-stress environments\, making her a valuable source of support during emergencies and disasters. Depending on the situation\, Minnie may provide quiet physical contact\, such as resting her face in someone’s hand\, sitting close by\, or using other grounding behaviours that help reduce stress and provide reassurance. "During emergencies and disasters\, people can experience a wide range of emotions\, from stress and anxiety to uncertainty and fear\," said Sue Henry\, Chief of CEMA. "Minnie's role is to provide a sense of calm when people need it most. Even a brief interaction\, whether it's petting Minnie or simply having her sit nearby\, can make a meaningful difference for someone going through a difficult experience." When CEMA is activated\, Minnie will be ready to provide support in a variety of settings. The signs provide key information\, such as stop ID\, route details\, and Calgary Transit’s TeleRide phone number (403-974-4000)\, using raised text and braille. “We want all our riders to have the ability to use transit independently and confidently as they travel around Calgary\,” says Sharon Fleming\, Director\, Calgary Transit. “Our tactile sign pilot on Route 90 is a small but important step in making the system more accessible for more Calgarians.” Calgary Transit engaged CNIB on the sign’s design. More engagement with CNIB and public feedback captured through a questionnaire will help inform potential future tactile sign rollout on all Calgary bus routes. “Accessible transit means more than just getting from one place to another — it's about ensuring safety\, independence\, and with confidence for all travelers\," says CNIB Advocacy Lead Taylor Bauer. “These tactile\, high-contrast bus stop signs along Route 90 are an encouraging step toward ensuring people who are blind\, Deafblind\, or have low vision can get where they need to go\, when they need to go. SUMMARY:Pedestrian dies following CTrain collision
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, July 27\, 2026\, shortly after 4 p.m.\, a female pedestrian walked into a prohibited area of the Shaganappi Point LRT Station along Bow Trail\, S.W. As a CTrain approached the station from the east\, the woman walked on to the tracks. The CTrain operator activated the train’s horn and emergency brakes\, however\, the female was struck by the train. Paramedics attended the scene and transported the woman to hospital but sadly\, she did not survive. Speed is not considered a factor in this incident\, however\, impairment on behalf of the pedestrian is being investigated. DESCRIPTION:Through a partnership between the Government of Canada\, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and The City of Calgary\, a commitment has been made to support a future free-to-use community soccer pitch in Calgary. The project is part of Jumpstart's commitment to build 25 community soccer pitches across Canada by 2029\, supported by more than $2 million in federal funding through Sport Canada. The initiative aims to create more opportunities for children and youth to participate in sport and recreation in welcoming\, accessible community spaces. The City of Calgary will work with the Government of Canada\, Jumpstart\, community organizations and residents throughout planning and engagement to ensure the future pitch meets local community needs. DESCRIPTION:The search for Parker\, who has been missing since Thursday\, July 16\, 2026\, remains ongoing. However\, given the amount of time that has passed and the information available to investigators\, we are refocusing our efforts from the physical search. Over 12 days\, officers\, specialized units\, trained search volunteers\, partner agencies and members of the public have worked around the clock to locate Parker. Ground search teams\, the Air Support Unit\, Canine Unit\, Mounted Patrol Team and Mountain Bike Unit have supported search efforts throughout Calgary. Searchers have walked more than 8\,600 kilometres\, roughly the distance from Calgary to Rome\, Italy\; dedicated more than 5\,500 hours to the operation and searched hundreds of homes and businesses. Despite these extensive efforts\, including the assessment of more than 600 tips and the review of tens of thousands of CCTV clips from hundreds of individual cameras\, residential security camera and dashcam footage\, Parker has not yet been located. Based on operational needs\, the information currently available and the results of the search to date\, we are refocusing from the physical search. Our commitment to locating Parker remains unchanged. Investigators will continue to assess new information and pursue investigative leads. “This case has affected the community deeply\, and there is not a single member of this team who does not want to find Parker and bring answers to his family\,” says Chief Katie McLellan. “We have felt the heartbreak of this search alongside Parker's family and alongside the community that has rallied around them. While our search efforts are evolving\, our commitment is not. We will continue to pursue every investigative avenue available to us\, and we remain steadfast in our determination to find Parker.” We extend our sincere gratitude to the thousands of community members\, volunteers\, numerous partner agencies and members of the media who assisted in the search effort. The compassion\, dedication and support shown throughout this investigation have been extraordinary. "Every single person involved in this search desperately wants to find Parker\, and despite the refocus from a large ground presence\, we will not rest until we do\," says acting Staff Sergeant Scott Guterson of the Calgary Police Service.
