How we detect meetings between world leaders

Diplomacy is relational, so one of the most useful things this site does is connect leaders to each other.
Two signals
First, references: when one leader's official schedule names another tracked leader — "call with President X", "meeting with Prime Minister Y", "joint statement" — we link the two. Second, co-location: when two leaders are recorded abroad in the same country on the same day, that's a strong hint of a meeting.
Across languages
Because we track each leader's known names and titles, detection works even when the schedules are in different languages — a French readout naming a Norwegian prime minister still links the two.
